Ahh Jetstar, I have mixed feelings about this airline. I love how cheap they are but that’s about it. Every time I get off a Jetstar flight I promise myself I will never fly with them again. That is until the time comes around for me to book my next flight and I see how cheap they are in comparison to other airlines. I forget about the service, lack of food and their disregard for running on time and I usually go ahead and book a Jetstar flight whereby the process is repeated and I get off the plane making the same promise I did last time.
As Xave and I are two backpackers living on a tight budget we decided to book with Jetstar for the first leg of our trip (Sydney to Hawaii) because I couldn’t justify spending almost double the amount with the next cheapest airline. The reason they are so cheap is because you are literally paying for a seat in a plane to get you to your destination. If you want anything more they will charge you. This includes baggage, seat allocation, extra leg room, food, entertainment, you name it they will charge you. Whilst I think this is fine for domestic travel (I don’t expect refreshments and good service on my hour long work commute on the train) surely a little leniency could be allowed for international travel. They didn’t even give Xave a cup of water when they brought around the food trolley (everything is more expensive than usual because they know you don’t have any other options) and he either had to pay $3 for a small bottle or get his own cup from the back of the plane!
Despite this, I am happy to say it was one of the best trips we have had with Jetstar, however the Thai Valium we took could have also played a large role. Travellers coming to Australia (and locals) looking for an affordable way to travel domestically and internationally should include Jetstar as one of their airline options. They have been around since 2004 and in Australia they are owned by the Qantas Group. Alternative airlines for domestic travel around Australia are Virgin Australia, Qantas and Tiger Airways.
