Sylvie’s Guesthouse, Haiku, Maui, Hawaii, USA

When we were researching hostels in Maui, we found them a bit more expensive than the other two islands. On my sister’s recent trip to Hawaii she had used Air BnB quite a lot and was very happy with her experiences. We decided to give it a go because the places available were almost on par with the hostels, except you got the whole place to yourselves.

I was apprehensive going through the list about where to stay because I didn’t really know what I should be looking for. Cost, accommodation type, owner and reviews played a large part in my decision (I slightly overlooked location which in future I will pay more attention to). After we decided on a price and that we wanted our own space, I then scanned through all the reviews. One that particularly stood out for us was Sylvie’s House in Haiku because all the reviews about previous experiences and about Sylvie were very positive. There were a lot of photos as well to show us exactly what to expect.

When we arrived in Maui, we followed Sylvie’s very informative directions to her place. Everything was just as she described and the pictures accurately reflected what her place looked like. The area we stayed in is located undernether the house that she lives in but is accessed only by stairs that run down the side of her place, so we could come and go unnoticed. The stairs led to our own private balcony that overlooked a beautiful rainforest garden and if she did have any neighbours we couldn’t see them.

It was so nice to have our own, clean room after the last week in hostels. It was a great sized place for a couple with a decent size bedroom (a TV, air con and wi-fi), a nice bathroom (including a hairdryer), a kitchenette, so we could cook our own food and a little table and chairs to eat at. There was also a washer and dryer on our balcony so we could do our own laundry.

We were happy with the location because it was in a small, friendly town right near some beaches that had great waves (very close to the famous surf spot ‘Jaws’) and right near the start of the Road to Hana. It seemed like it was on the quieter side of the island because the main place tourists stay is Lahaina. However, overall we loved our stay here and would definitely recommend it to couples who were looking for a secluded place to unwind and spend time together.
