The Triple Frontier is a tri-border area of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay where the Iguazú and Paraná rivers meet. The actual junction of all the border is signified by 3 obelisks, one in each country painted with the national colours of the country in which it stands.
Getting to each country is relatively easy if you have all the correct paperwork. Here are some tips about each of the border crossings:
Argentina to Brazil Buses leave to Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil regularly from the Puerto Iguazú’s Bus Terminal on Av Córdoba. The bus driver will stop and wait for you at the Argentinian and Brazilian Immigration offices while you complete formalities.
Argentina to Paraguay Buses leave to Ciudad del Este in Paraguay regularly from the Puerto Iguazú’s Bus Terminal on Av Córdoba. The trip takes about an hour and costs AR$25, tickets can be purchased at the terminal or on the bus. Bus driver stops and waits for you at Argentinian Immigration office while you complete formalities. The driver then goes through Brazil (although doesn’t stop) and drops you off at Paraguayan Immigration office and leaves you to fend for yourself from there.
Brazil to Argentina The bus to Argentina leaves from the street Rua Mem de Sá NEXT to Foz do Iguaçu’s Urban Bus Terminal NOT from the terminal itself. The trip costs approx. R$8.50 and takes 45mins -1hr. The driver will drop you off at the Brazilian Immigration office and give you a ticket (remember to ask for one) for another bus so you don’t have to pay again. The bus stop is just next to the immigration office. When you get on the next bus, the driver will stop at the Argentinian Immigration office and wait for everybody to complete formalities. You are then dropped off at Puerto Iguazú’s Bus Terminal on Av Córdoba.
Brazil to Paraguay The bus to Paraguay leaves from Av Juscelino Kubitschek ACROSS the road, in front of Foz do Iguaçu’s Urban Bus Terminal NOT from the terminal itself. Trip costs about R$4.50 and takes 30-45mins. Tell the bus driver to drop you off at Brazilian Immigration to sort out formalities and then cross over Friendship Bridge (5 min walk) to the Paraguayan Immigration office.
Paraguay to Argentina The Paraguayan Immigration office is located at the start of the Friendship Bridge in Ciudad del Este. Get stamped out of Paraguay here first and then cross over the bridge (5 min walk). Wait for a bus marked ‘Puerto Iguazú’ which will take you to Argentina (buses go via Brazil but no need to stamp in at Brazilian customs).
Paraguay to Brazil The Paraguayan Immigration office is located at the start of the Friendship Bridge in Ciudad del Este. Get stamped out of Paraguay here first and then cross over the bridge (5 min walk). The Brazilian Immigration office is at the other end so stamp into Brazil here and then walk 5 mins up the road to catch a passing bus to Foz do Iguaçu. Locals from these countries do not need visas to enter the neighbouring countries. No matter which border crossing you are doing, make sure you ask the driver to stop at the appropriate immigration offices otherwise you may get fined when trying to leave the country.
Visas These three countries require at least some citizens of other countries to get visas, so make sure you check if you are one of them. For Argentina, citizens from Australia ($100 US), Canada and the US need to pay a reciprocal fee which can be organised online at http://www.migraciones.gov.ar. For Paraguay, citizens from Australia ($135 US), Canada and the US need a visa that can be organised from home or at the Paraguayan consulate in Foz do Iguaçu. For Brazil, citizens of Australia, Canada and the US need a visa to visit which is valid for 90 days. It usually takes a minimum of a week to be processed and is obtained from a Brazilian consulate at home.
